About Tom Cowan Exercise Physiology

Tom Cowan is a leading Exercise Physiologist, who is widely recognised as an expert in prescribing and delivering clinical exercise programmes. He specialises in working with cancer and cardiac patients and has been selected by the Faculty for Sport and Exercise Medicine UK and Public Health England to join their expert panel for Cancer and Exercise.

With the Tom Cowan Exercise Physiology App, you can receive a completely bespoke exercise programme tailored specifically to your clinical history, medical diagnosis, treatment plan, medications and side effects, fitness levels and the objectives that you and your medical team wish to achieve. Tom prescribes exercise programmes which are underpinned by an evidence-based approach, following Sport and Exercise Science principles, the latest research and, for clinical patients, guidance from clinical bodies such as BACPR.

Please note an initial consultation will be carried out first, in order to understand the necessary needs, considerations, and objectives. To arrange an initial consultation please contact tom@tcowan.co.uk or visit www.tcowan.co.uk for more information.

App features that will help you to achieve your health and fitness goals include:

1. Personalised Plan - Receive a bespoke exercise programme which is completely tailored to your needs, including your medical condition and clinical considerations, and your goals. Programmes can be devised for preventative means, such as to improve your blood pressure and reduce your cardiovascular risk, or to optimise your physiology during treatment, such as to support your immune function and maintain body composition throughout chemotherapy, or to rehabilitate following a cardiovascular event or post-treatment such as surgery. You will receive an easy-to-follow daily plan, which is prescribed each week and adapted accordingly throughout your programme to provide the most personalised and effective plan possible.

2. In-app Messaging Function - Access Tom’s expertise throughout your programme by communicating through the in-app messaging function. You can also feed back to Tom about your programme, providing valuable and informative insights as to how you are feeling and managing with your programme and other important information such as updates on injuries.

3. Wearable integration - Connect your fitness and activity monitor to provide Tom with a greater insight into, and ability to monitor, your exercise and lifestyle.

4. Nutrition Log - Record your nutritional intake within the app for Tom to be able to assess and advise on, as part of a holistic approach to improving your health. Please note that you will not be able to receive nutritional advice for clinical conditions through the App and instead you must seek the advice of a registered dietician.

5. Check-ins - Gain complete insights about your performance with easy check-ins and real-time updates.

6. Progress - Monitor your progress with powerful analytics.

7. Assessment Function and In-built Camera - Record assessment results within the app, including your weight, body composition and circumference measurements, to track physiological changes over the course of your programme. The app’s in-built camera allows you to observe postural and aesthetic improvements over time.

Note regarding Apple Health:

This App integrates with Apple Health to show your daily activity - distance, steps, flights and energy expenditure to help with monitoring and prescribing your programme.

This App also uses Apple Health to track exercise metrics including calorie expenditure and heart rate during an exercise session, if an Apple Watch is used to record the exercise session.

Exercise, physical activity and lifestyle metrics are shared with the trainer and the App to allow better monitoring and prescription of your exercise programme.
