The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), an internationally renowned source of national counselor certification, administers and maintains the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE). It is part of the counselor credentialing requirements for candidates seeking certification to practice as a counselor, and it is designed as a form of assessment to determine whether these candidates have the necessary abilities, knowledge, and skills to succeed in the field.
The National Counselor exam consists of 200 multiple-choice, non-sectioned questions on pencil and paper. You will be asked a series of questions based on the original eight Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) curriculum areas and five work behaviors from NBCC's national job analysis during the test. Before being featured on the examination, all of these questions were reviewed and field-tested, and a new version of the National Counselors exam is administered for each new test day.
Questions will be based on the following six domains:
Professional Practice and Ethics – 12%
Intake, Assessment, and Diagnosis – 12%
Areas of Clinical Focus – 29%
