About Harlem Culture Tour Mobile App

The Harlem Culture Tour mobile application is your guide to the places, people and events that made the Harlem, the center of Black culture. The app provides high-quality historic images from the newly created Getty Images "Black History & Culture Collection," along with narratives for each of the 70 points-of-interest included in the app. Users can see images of the events and figures from Harlem's past (and present) and read about these vital events, from the well-known to the previously unseen or untold.

The app takes you to the world famous Apollo Theater and includes rarely seen back-stage images of performers such as The Temptations and Smokey Robinson. You can see the site of the former Savoy Ballroom and Cotton Club, with images in the app that show what these famous clubs actually looked like, and what went on inside! See where Malcolm X held his rallies on the streets of Harlem, and how the community reacted to his death. The app visits the Polo Grounds, where professional baseball and football teams played home games in Harlem. You'll read stories and see images of people that shaped Harlem into the "Black Mecca." The lives and works of Marcus Garvey and Father Divine, among others, are explored, and accounts from Harlem's black owned newspaper are used to provide context of these people and events, at the time they occurred.

Get a look at the jazz clubs, dance palaces and theaters that entertained Harlem and set trends throughout the world. The Harlem Culture Tour takes you to these spots and provides images of entertainers like Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday and the places where they got their starts. Learn about the Hotel Theresa, the "Black Waldorf" and a central point in Harlem for holding rallies and demonstrations for world leaders.

The Harlem Culture Tour is a walking history tour of Harlem, taking users to 70 points-of-interest in central Harlem, with a GPS guided map, to tell the authentic stories of Harlem and encourage education of Black culture to all audiences.
