About Digi-Past Mycenes

The acropolis of Mycenae was the center of the Mycenaean civilization, which flourished 3,500 years ago. The hill of the acropolis, surrounded by steep ravines, was protected from attacks and at the same time could overlook the Argolic plain, as well as the roads of the region. The acropolis was the political, military and economic center of the Mycenaean state. The royal family, officials, priests and the king's craftsmen lived within its strong walls. The archives of the centralized state and the agricultural production of the territory were also kept here. The giant boulder walls were so imposing that they sparked the legend they were built by the Cyclopes. In case of danger, all subjects would take refuge within the walls to protect themselves from the enemies.
