About AI Photo Culling — PhotoPicker

PhotoPicker is a powerful iOS app built for photographers who travel light — without a laptop.
It helps you quickly pick your best shots right after the shoot — on the go, with no need to import files or connect to the internet. Built-in AI analyzes your photos for sharpness, closed eyes, duplicates, facial expressions, and movement to help you select the best images in seconds.

Access photos directly from memory cards, external SSDs, or folders — sort them on your iPhone or iPad, and once you’re home, simply transfer the results into Lightroom, Capture One, or any other editor that supports XMP.

Also works with the standard iOS photo library — including automatic AI photo analysis.

Key Features of PhotoPicker:

1. AI & Manual Culling
• Smart AI detects blur, closed eyes, duplicates, facial expressions, and motion to find the best shots in a series.
• Prefer manual culling? Swipe up to keep, down to reject.
• Apply flags, star ratings (1–5), and color labels — all saved to XMP automatically.

2. No Import Needed
• Cull photos directly from memory cards, external drives, or any folder in the Files app.
• XMP files are saved alongside your images — ready for import into your favorite editor.

3. Lightroom Classic Integration
• Open and cull Lightroom Classic catalogs right in the app.
• Flags, ratings, and color labels are synced back to the catalog.

4. Custom Catalogs
• Create your own catalogs with JPEG and RAW files.
• RAWs are not duplicated — the app works with file references.
• Use flexible export options: copy XMPs, remove rejected files, and more.

5. Fast Compare & Review
• Tap to quickly flip between photos, even in zoomed-in view.
• Check focus and expressions in detail without leaving review mode.

Buggy and doesn’t work
I signed up for trial, it would not unlock features correctly. It said I had to have paid account and the trial features showed the app doesn’t work for what I needed. I quickly uninstalled it and it asked if I wanted to cancel subscription. I clicked cancel yet I was still charged after the trial ended. Very poor designed app.

Love the App!
I find this app very useful. The AI works pretty well to find the best picture. While I don’t always agree with what it determines as the best, it’s usually correct or not very far off. AI aside, I really love the ability to quickly compare two photos. You can easily tap the screen left and right and cycle between two photos to identify the better one. Overall very happy with the app. I bought the one year plan and it’s even more worth it when you factor in that you can share it with your Apple Family. The customer service team is very kind and helpful too. Zero complaints from me. I think my only feedback is I look forward to any improvements for the AI model.

Does not work with external drives or network nas
It will see external drives, and load folders showing thumbnails, but when you hit open, you just get a black screen. With my NAS drive, you can browse to the folder and see thumbnails, but the open button doesn’t work. It seems to work browsing albums within the photos app or Lightroom catalogs, but you don’t really need a new app if the photos are already in those programs. This app would make sense culling the external drive before adding to Lightroom, but it cannot do that as promised. Totally useless!

Doesn't recognize all image types
I have several folders filled the PNG images and PhotoPicker does not recognize them. I'd gladly pay full price for this app if it actually could be used with multiple image formats.

Fantastic, almost perfect
Amazing piece of software, exactly what I was looking for, for culling photos on the go with an ipad and mini keyboard without importing first into Lightroom. Really amazing. Very fast, quality of the previews is amazing, retains RAW applied film simulation and camera settings, instant transitions between photos (vs. the annoying fade-out effect with lightroom). And keyboard shortcuts are great ! The things why it’s not a 5-stars: - really heavy on battery, think 50% battery in two hours of use. - can’t open directly picked photos to an app (lightroom) they have to be exported first to a folder. - can’t rename catalogs. Would be super useful : be able to keep zoom level when switching between photos, be able to see RAWs instead of embedded JPEGs. Ability to Move picked files instead of copying them when you click « Move picked RAW to folder ». Abolity to move rejected to a folder instead of just only having the option to delete them. I am keeping my subscription tho to support the developer.

Found bugs after 5 min
Was looking for a app to fill in the photo managing gap in an iOS photo editing workflow. This app is not it. I’m a hobbyist photographer. I would pay a 1 time price for a good app (like affinity photo), but I won’t pay a monthly fee - that’s strike 1. I downloaded / tested this app just to see how it works - only took 5 min to find a significant bug. I used the filter function to narrow down to 2 pictures, then I exported them to a new album. When it was done exporting, it said it had exported 5 pics - I checked, sure enough it did. I filtered / exported 3 different times using different criteria which resulted in 3 or 4 pics. Each export had 5 pics in it??? If it can’t filter/export the pics I want, how can I possibly use this app (plus, I won’t pay monthly for an app).

This is exactly what I’m looking for!
For someone who travels a lot, and often doesn’t have a computer with me, I do a lot of my photo editing and organization with my iPad, however, the main thing that was missing was a process similar to Lightroom or Bridge to quickly and efficiently narrow down a whole memory card’s worth of images. Now I can quickly find the handful of images I’m interested in in the 700 or so that will be on my card. I do all of my photo editing on Affinity Photo, and am able to export the photos I want into an iOS photo album and go from there with Affinity Photo. I will be happy paying for this excellent app moving forward as it will make my mobile photo editing life much much more efficient and easy! Thank you for the wonderful app Roman, and for working with me and incorporating more features into it! This is great!

Tried on a Trip
Took this app for a Europe trip this fall on an iPad Pro. Worked well with 1800 photos after coming up with several work-arounds. It is setup for importing all the photos at once. If you add photos to the same album in Photos from another day of shooting PhotoPicker doubles up on the previously added photos. It does not recognize duplicates. Found if each day’s photos go into a different album then add that to PhotoPicker all is good. Also need to turnoff off sending to iCloud your Photos app and iCloud Backup for the iPad otherwise it will max out iCloud storage unless you have a very big allotment. These problems can be overcome if it take full advantage of iPadOS 13.0. One less step of importing into Photos then PhotoPicker would simplify the process. Understand there is a change that may allow the use of external storage, hope so. Also hope that while importing it can do a backup at the same time. Will be taking it on another trip in December along with Lightroom to see which does the best grading job.
