Pronoun Heroes is an engaging way to teach inspiring superheroes the use of pronouns. Created by certified speech-language pathologists and developed by Smarty Ears Apps, Pronoun Heroes teaches and reinforces the use of pronouns in multiple ways. The comic superhero theme is sure to delight players of all ages, while the skills targeted and the data compilation delights the busy SLP.
A multi-level, multi-player app, Pronoun Heroes consists of four (4) activities to teach and reinforce pronoun usage. Pronoun Heroes targets multiple types of pronouns (e.g., personal subjective, personal objective, demonstrative, possessives, and reflexive) and includes 19 different pronouns. Two of the four activities allow the adult to customize targeted pronouns to tailor the therapy session specifically for the clientele.
How to Use
When playing Pronoun Heroes, the active player is shown at the top of the screen. If there are multiple players, the active player changes with each screen change. Along with the avatar picture, a row of icons will be displayed as a visual representation of that player’s correct answers. When the activity is completed, a tap on the “done” button, brings the app back to the activity page.
There are four different areas in Pronoun Heroes.
• Where is the Pronoun:
In this section, the user can select either words or phrases. In words, the user is shown four superheroes each holding a sign. The player chooses the sign with the pronoun. In the phrases activity, the user is given a segmented sentence and asked to tap on the word that is the pronoun.
• Which one is not a Pronoun?
In this section, the user is shown the four superheroes each holding a sign. The player is to choose the sign that does NOT have a pronoun. This allows the individual to have discussions on negation and other language elements.
• Find the Picture
In this customizable section, the user is shown a pronoun and two pictures. The player is to tap on the picture that best depicts the pronoun. This section is customizable by tapping on the settings button to choose the pronouns to target. Customizing allows the individual to tailor the lesson by selecting one or more than one app to be worked on during that session.
• Let’s use Pronouns!
In this customizable section, the user is shown a picture of a real-life event and given a sentence. One of the words in the sentence is missing, and the player must drag-and-drop the correct pronoun into the space.
Customization
Pronoun Heroes allows individuals to select one, or more than one, pronoun to be targeted in two of its four activities. By tailoring the targeted pronouns, the app can easily move between teaching individual pronouns to progress monitoring overall learning.
