Located in a mountain area. This is where the famous Tvardishka Pass begins with the picturesque meanders of the Tvardishka River. The passage is also the shortest connection between North and South Bulgaria: Nova Zagora - Tvarditsa - Elena - Veliko Turnovo. The municipality covers the northern slopes of Sredna Gora. On the territory of the municipality are located Chumerna Peak, part of the "Zhrebchevo" Dam, crossing the Tundzha River. The city has an industrial zone. Currently, the focus is on tourism and agriculture. The name of the town derives from the north fortress, called Gradishte - Fortress. The city has been bearing the same name for centuries: Hardwood, from "stronghold". Ever since the time of Byzantine historian Manuel Phil, who praises the victories of Byzantine commander Michael Head Tarkhaniot (1300), it has been written "And Chervishte is a witness for Tvarditsa, for every eyewitness to know about it." According to the medieval maps (XVI-XVIII c.) The town was marked with the name Verzaraz.
