It is one of the nine famous books of Hadith among the Sunnis, with the remaining six being; 6 Qutb al-Sittah, al-Muwatta and Musnad Imam Ahmad.
Although it is known as Musnad, it does not narrate hadith like other Musnads. As such, it is not arranged in the narration of narrators like Tayalisi or Ibn Humble. This is a Sunan book like Sunan Ibn Majah, where topics like Sunan are arranged.
According to Maktaba Shamila, it contains about three thousand five hundred (3500) hadiths. The format of the hadiths is according to the content. Most of the hadiths of Sunan are saheeh, only a few hadiths are weak.
Darimi translates these hadiths into Isa ibn Umar al-Samarkandi; Whose date of death is unknown, but probably after 293 AH. Then it goes to those who:
Abdullah Ibn Ahmad Ibn Hamawiyyah Al-Sarkhasi (293-331 AH)
Abdur Rahman Ibn Muhammad Ibn Muzaffar Al-Daudi "Jamal Al-Islam" (364-48 AH)
Abu Waqt Abdul-Awal Ibn Isa Ibn Shuaib Al-Sijijji (458-553 AH)
