In our country, in 1968, the first Intensive Care Unit was created at the Emergency Hospital, Public Assistance, Dr. Alejandro del Río and at that same time the first Intensive Care Unit for coronary patients was born at the San Borja Hospital. Since then its number has increased significantly, currently totaling 58 Units, 25 of which are located in the Metropolitan Region. The remaining 33 Units are distributed throughout the country, concentrating on the most densely populated Regions (V and VIII regions with 6 units each). Despite this great increase, the needs of Intensive Care beds in our country are not even close. Currently, less than 3% of the total beds available in our country are Intensive Care. International standards advise that 8% of hospital beds correspond to this category. If we consider public and private availability, there are 228 Intensive beds in the Metropolitan Region and 223 in the remaining Regions of the country. Based on the above, we consider that this discipline is still in full development.
