The phrase “the past cannot be separated from the present” is almost worn out from its frequent mention among thinkers and those interested in the history of nations and societies, even if it carries all the truth. The present of the Islamic nation, regardless of its races and regions, has been shaped by its past since the days of the Muhammadan mission. Where the nascent state arose, and proceeded to acquire the means of power until it had the predominance and sovereignty over nations that had not been given weight before that. But the calamities followed that nation, so it divided it, occupied it by itself, and made it retreat and weaken, and if it remained, as Al-Akkad says: “a steadfast force,” even though in recent centuries it has not had the means of power that were available to its enemies, which makes one puzzled about the reason for its steadfastness, and the survival of its culture and societies. In this book, Al-Akkad tries to monitor the Islamic present against the background of reading the past in order to understand the causes of what has befallen the nation, and how it can build its future?
