About Kebaya Design

Kebaya is a clothing that has always been used by Indonesian women from the past. The use of kebaya is not limited to certain ethnic groups and cultures.

The history of kebaya

The origin of the word kebaya comes from Arabic, abaya which means clothing. It is believed that the kebaya used to come from regions of China that were hundreds of years ago. Then the use of kebaya clothing began to spread from Malacca, Java, Bali, Sumatra, and Sulawesi.

Initially before 1600, kebaya was a clothing worn by Javanese women, especially in the regions of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, Central Java. Like clothing that is often used by R.A Kartini is a traditional kebaya from the Central Java region.

When is kebaya used?

This kebaya is worn by all circles, both aristocratic women and ordinary people, used as everyday clothing or when there are certain events.

Complementary clothing from this kebaya is a fabric with a stiff texture or often called blouse to cover the chest, a long cloth with stagen wrapped around the abdomen.

At certain events, kebaya clothes using a series of piti combined with a long batik patterned cloth. Then the hair bun or bun and beautified with jewelry earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, and fans.
