The book that is now before the reader is a translation of the book Al-Inshâf fî Asbâb al-Ikhtilâf, the work of a great scholar, Shah Waliyullah ad-Dahlawi (1114–1176 H.). As the title suggests, this book discusses the reasons for different understandings of the Al-Qur'an and as-Sunnah, which ultimately lead to different legal decisions. This is because the flexible verses and hadiths can be understood the same by each mujtahid imam and can also be understood differently.
But that need not worry us. This is because differences of opinion in fiqh law are the result of research that does not need to be seen as a factor that weakens the position of Islamic law, on the contrary, it can provide concessions to many people as stated by the Prophet Muhammad: "Ikhtilâfu ummatî Rahmatun: differences of opinion among my people are grace."
