In this book, Al-Ghaza]i restores the meaning of purification which seems to have been reversed, first of all by showing the practice of purification of the companions of r.a. and tabiin r.a. In fact, it cannot be denied that the early generations of Islam were easy and light in maintaining external purity. They feel enough to stay away from uncleanness when they see it, without needing to think too much about the small possibility of uncleanness if it doesn't exist. They also used to pray in the dirt-floored mosque.
Al-Ghazali also pointed to the convenience of maintaining external purity in the agreement of fiqh scholars regarding the five types of impurity that are forgiven because they are difficult to avoid.
Examples are blood or pus from pimples, or dust on the streets mixed with animal feces.
What is interesting is Al-Ghazali's choice in determining the terms of holy and purifying water.
In this regard, Al-Ghazali chose the Maliki school, which is looser, even though he is a scholar of the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence.
He also did this to support the ease of purification, especially for water-scarce countries.
From this description of the ease of purification, it is clear that Al-Ghazali intends to emphasize the importance of carrying out purification activities easily, without overdoing it and bothering oneself, while still adhering to the strict attitude of maintaining inner purity as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad. and friends r.a.
