BMI definition
BMI, or body mass index, is a measurement based on a person's height and weight. The results of a BMI calculation can help determine whether a person is the right weight for their height.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is calculated using a straightforward formula based on a person's weight and height. BMI is calculated using the formula BMI = kg/m2 , where kg is a person's weight in kg and m2 is a measure of their height in meters squared. BMI is defined as (Weight in kg)/(Height in Meters * Height in Meters) in its simplest form.
For instance, if a person weighs 70 kg and is 162 cm tall, their BMI would be 70/(1.62*1.62) = 26.7
A person's BMI can be calculated to determine if they are at a healthy weight, underweight, or overweight. A person's health risk may drastically increase if their BMI is outside of the healthy range.
Typical BMI for adults
BMI: status of weight
Underweight: Below 18.5
Normal or Healthy: 18.5 to 24.9 Weight
25.0 to 29.9: Overweight
30.0 & above: Obese
Doctors use BMI to evaluate diet and physical activity, as well as to diagnose cardiovascular disease and other health issues.
