Raufoss as an industrial site arose after a political decision in 1896, when the state moved the main arsenal in Kristiania (Oslo) to Raufoss because of the union conflict with the Swedes.
This led to the establishment of the village town of Raufoss from 1896. The place and the sports and football interests grew in step with the development of the factory.
Raufoss Idrettslag (RIL) was established as a job for the factory workers in 1918. The first football at Raufoss is described played from 1903.
