LIVE YOUR SPECIAL MOMENT. ENJOY THE AUTOCINE.

The first drive-in movie theater in Spain was born in Madrid in 1959, in what is now Alameda de Osuna. It closed in a few months. Its owners were Antonio Garrigues Díaz-Cañabate and Pepìn Bello. There was also a drive-in in Barcelona on the Casteldefels highway, near the El Prat airport, it was called EL AUTOCINE and it closed in the 80s. Currently, there are several in the Valencian Community: STAR drive-in in Valencia, DRIVEIN drive-in in Denia and Drive-in theater EL SUR in Muchamiel, in Jávea there is also a drive-in cinema that only opens in summer. There is also another drive-in movie theater in Gijón, Asturias. Other failed projects were the Canadian drive-in in Seville, the drive-in in Granada.

Denia at the same time that the first pirated videos were detected, when the majority of Spaniards drove a Seat and almost 50 years after its use became popular in the US. It was the first, in the Valencian Community and the oldest that is still open , from the same period is El Sur and shortly after the Star which opened in 1981 and has a capacity of 400 cars similar to the drive-in El Sur. When the distance between the powerful projector and the giant screen is usually 20 or 30 meters, the Drive-In reaches 100 meters, an added value thanks to which the drive-in can compete with traditional theaters. The site, a 12,000-square-meter plot, was carefully chosen. At a crossroads and well visible to arouse curiosity. Its promoter also set out with a clear objective from the first moment: to dismantle the image of the American drive-in as a place where couples were to cuddle. For this reason, from the beginning, Carles Miralles took great pains in family programming to boost his Drive-In as the ideal option to watch a movie in a group.

Most of them are located in the Valencian Community, on the shores of the Mediterranean, and on the Cantabrian coast. In Spain there are several in Valencia, Denia, Jávea, Muchamiel, Gijòn, Torrelavega (Cantabria), Bilbao and they are quite successful and have a great appeal: "it is a business that works well in summer and not so much in winter", clarifies Germán Martínez, of the drive-in El Sur.

They usually have capacity for about 400 cars and usually show two films.

The drive-in theater El Sur and the Star are among the best known in the area and they will celebrate almost 30 years of uninterrupted permanence. There are also the Drive In, the Mar Menor and the Flipper in Murcia, as well as the Ciudad Jardín in Salamanca, and the Gijón in Asturias.

In 2017, on February 24, the Autocine Madrid RACE was inaugurated in Madrid, occupying 25,000m2 and space for 350 cars, a 250m2 screen and a restaurant area. It is located in the area of Chamartín (Isla de Java street) and it premiered its activity by showing the film "Grease" (1978)
