About Kursk

Kursk - The Biggest Tank Battle is a turn based strategy game set on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. From Joni Nuutinen: by a wargamer for the wargamers since 2011

Historical background: In 1943, the Germans hoped to shorten the Russian front by eliminating the Kursk Salient, which had been created in the aftermath of the Battle of Stalingrad. The Wehrmacht, focusing the majority of their elite divisions on the Eastern Front in this relatively small area, envisioned Panzer spearheads breaking through the northern and southern flanks of the salient to encircle the Red Army forces. However, the Soviets had excellent intelligence about the German plan, called Operation Citadel. This, along with German delays in waiting for new weapons, the Tiger heavy tank and the Panther medium tank, gave the Red Army time to construct a series of defensive lines and gather large reserve forces. This huge concentration of armed forces on both sides led to the biggest tank battle in history on the outskirts of Prokhorovka on July 12, 1943. The question "could the German Army have succeeded in this offensive", was kind of left unanswered, as the Allied landing in Sicily and the Soviet offensives elsewhere on the Eastern Front pressured Hitler to abort Operation Citadel only after 10 days.

"Is it really necessary to attack Kursk, and indeed in the east this year at all? Do you think anyone even knows where Kursk is? The entire world doesn't care if we capture Kursk or not. What is the reason that is forcing us to attack this year on Kursk, or even more, on the Eastern Front?"
- General Heinz Guderian during the planning of Operation Citadel
