Birbal was born in 1528 to a poor Brahmin family at Tikavanpur on the banks of the Jamuna. His real name was Mahesh Das. He became an adviser in the court of Emperor Akbar for his wisdom, humor and sense of justice. He was in charge of Akbar's military and administrative activities. He is said to have died in 1563 during the expedition to Afghanistan. The emperor was deeply saddened by his death and was in a state of shock for several months.
