Roadside shrines are an indispensable element of the Polish landscape. It is with them that in many places the tradition of picnics is cultivated, that's where the rosary prayer is prayed for, or prayers in times of danger. Some forgotten, with others still appear fresh flowers and candles. All in their own way beautiful and worth knowing more about them.
The aim of the website is to broaden interest in the surrounding art, to see beauty in the immediate surroundings, to deepen knowledge about folk and religious traditions of our "small homelands", small sacral architecture - roadside shrines, crosses, field figures. Preserved roadside shrines are an important element in a rural landscape that deserves attention and can be a tourist attraction. These significant accents of the folklore of the village, being a testimony to the faith of the past generations, are deteriorating, being robbed and disappearing at a rapid pace, and sometimes replaced by new concrete or brick objects. It is the responsibility of local communities to protect historic original copies, as well as to include them on routes and tourist routes. The route of crosses and chapels presented on the website could be a good exemplification of old popular piety, processions, services, but also the opportunity to "discover" or promote small forgotten villages and towns, which often the only historic asset is sometimes an old cross or chapel. Various types of chapels and crosses will be presented in southern Małopolska, ie roadside crosses, field shrines, various pole chapels, box chapels housed on trees, figures placed on plinths. Traditional wooden chapels of village masters, as well as stone Lemko crosses or large-sized figures will also be shown.
