Tajuddin Ahmad was the first premier of Bangladesh and a renowned leader of liberation war movement. Syed Nazrul Islam was acting President in the absence of Bangabandhu.
Tajuddin Ahmad was familiar as an honest and meritorious politician.
Tajuddin Ahmad’s leading government was named as Mujibnagar Government that played a vital role at that time.
He was the Finance and Planning Minister post independence until his resignation in 1974.
After the horrible assassination of Bangabandhu, 4 National leaders including Tajuddin Ahmad were assassinated in Dhaka Central Jail. In the same place he was killed by bullet on 3rd November of 1975.
Personal Life
Tajuddin Ahmad was born on 23rd July of 1925 at Dorodiya, Kapasia, Gazipur. His parents are respectively Moulovi Md. Yasin Khan and Meherunessa Khan.
His wife Syeda Zohra Tajuddin is presently the member of the cabinet of Awami League, the political party. He has 4 offsprings. His elder daughter Sharmin Ahmad Reepi, middle daughter is a reputed writer and columnist and presently the MP from Gazipur-4 seat Simin Hossen Rimi and the youngest daughter Mahjabin Ahmad Mimi. The youngest member of the family Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj was an MP from Gazipur-4 seat and resigned on 7th July of 2012.
Introduction of Political Life
Tajuddin Ahmad was a remarkable founder of East Pakistan Student League on 4th January 1948. He was also the initiator of forming Awami Muslim League on 23rd June 1949. He was the member of All Party State Language Struggle Council. He also acted as the Secretary of Dhaka District Awami League from 1953 to 1957.
On 1954 he was elected as the councilor by defeating the secretary of Muslim League being a candidate of Juktofront. He became the organizational secretary of Provincional Awami League and secretary respectively on 1964 and 1966. On February 6, 1966 Bangabandhu Sheikh Muzibur Rahman raised 6 points at all party conference in Lahore, there he also participated. He was also a remarkable member of Agenda Selection Committee of the conference. In the same year, he was arrested in the law of home safety. On 1968 he was re-elected as the secretary of Awami League being prisoned.
He was rescued from the jail as the result of 69’s mass uprising. On 1970 he was re-elected as the secretary of Awami League for the 3rd time. In the same year he was elected as the secretary of board of parliament which was formed for the general election. He was elected as the member of national assembly, the election held on 7th December.
Liberation War
Though won by huge mandate, Yahiya Khan did not let Awami League to take the charge, moreover suspended the activity of national assembly. And so Sheikh Mujibur Rahman called for Non cooperation. On 25th March, 1971 the Pakistani Military started genocide at the deep night. Bangabandhu was arrested and was sent to West Pakistan. “The decision which I took that time was to form an independent government that to run the struggle for the independence, for the 75 million people”- Tajuddin Ahmad.
First defense, then preparation and then revenge. These were the strategies to run the govt. He hid himself and proceeded to the border to organize the battle. In the mean time, he reached the West Bengal border through the way to Faridpur-Khustia on 30th March. Along with barrister Amir-Ul-Islam, he crossed the Meherpur border on 31st March and reached to the Indian land. The district controller of Meherpur Mr. Toufik-E-Elahi Chowdhury helped them to cross the border.
Death
After the killing of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with whole family members, he was prisoned at the Dhaka Central Jail and he along with Syed Nazrul Islam, Md. Monsur Ali and A.H.M. Kamruzzaman were killed unmanously which is noticed as the black chapter in the history of Bangladesh.
