‘Apparitions’ is a series of artworks by Luciana Haill experienced as layers of augmented reality on smartphones. They bring back local heritage & social memory elements lost in wars, storms and during rapid gentrification. The first series was made in 2018, inspired by lost Victorian landmarks from her hometown of Hastings, East Sussex.
The Apparitions are St Leonards Pier (demolished after damage from storms and WWII), the Prince Albert Clocktower Memorial (damaged by fire in 1972 and demolished) and Bexhill beach huts (lost to storms in 1907).
You can view the artworks via the app using your Smartphone camera at the original sites of lost heritage (in Hastings, St Leonards and Bexhill) and trigger them using special postcards of each place. Map locations, postcard images and lots more information can be found on https://apparitions.site
After downloading the app users can walk along the seafront on the pavement, the app will guide them to head west towards St Leonards pier (opposite The Royal Victoria Hotel), or if nearer the centre to walk towards the crossing opposite Harold Place where The Memorial once proudly stood.
