IMPORTANT: The interactive camera practice module does not work properly on certain devices. It is expected to have financing and to improve this module in the future. If you experience an unexpected operation, use only the learning module and work on the recognition of the type of emotion directly with the person with ASD, instructing him to try to imitate the expression of the videos displayed and even photographing it from the device that has the device installed. app to provide you with a subsequent feedback on your own image.
The FACE2FACE-EMOTIONDETECTOR application consists of a free non-profit application, without advertising and without purchases, whose intention is to support the learning and recognition of emotions in people with ASD (autism spectrum disorders), but always under the supervision of specialists, fathers, mothers or guardians and in the exercise of exclusively personal or domestic activities.
This application has been financed and developed within the project called "Learning the recognition of emotions in people with autism spectrum", corresponding to the V edition of the Galileo Innovation and Transfer Plan of the University of Córdoba, modality IV, UCO-SOCIAL projects -INNOVA, in collaboration with Obra Social la Caixa.
FACE2FACE-EMOTIONDETECTOR has also had the collaboration of the Colegio de Educación Especial Niño Jesús, Termens Foundation, located in Cabra (Córdoba), Spain, and the work team is made up of professionals from different disciplines (teachers, computer engineers, psychologists). You can consult the website associated with the project at https://www.uco.es/ayrna/teaprojects/
This project has had the following duration: July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020, so a priori no subsequent maintenance will take place. Keep in mind that it is a non-profit project, in which the work team has not obtained any economic benefit and is not professionally dedicated to the development and maintenance of applications for mobile devices. The authors of the FACE2FACE-EMOTIONDETECTOR application have developed this application in order to serve as support for people with ASD in their integration into society, hoping that it will be useful and contributing "a grain of sand" more to this type of causes .
More specifically, it is expected that the FACE2FACE-EMOTIONDETECTOR application will mainly support children with ASD for learning and recognizing basic expressions such as joy and surprise. For this, the app presents the following functionalities distributed in two modules:
- Learning module: Learning about the expression of joy and surprise. For this, two animated stories are used, displayed on a television and activated by the play button. The objective of this module is for the person with ASD to become familiar with these two emotions in order to be able to imitate them in an interactive activity in the second module.
- Interactive practice module: Interactive practice where the person with ASD is instructed to imitate the expression of the learned story for joy or surprise. To do this, you have to be in selfie mode with the camera of the Android device until the expression that the person with ASD is imitating is automatically captured. If that imitation is done correctly it would provide a positive message, and if not it would again provide the opportunity to imitate the expression again.
It may be necessary in certain cases for this practice to be supervised by an adult or specialist, since the capture of the image depends on many factors and may require a process of trial and error: Light, environment, closeness or distance, camera of the device, etc. It is hoped to improve this interactive practice module in the future.
