The Brainheart project
Intelligent systems for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in the elderly through psychophysical well-being
Brainheart is the support app for the homonymous project, developed in collaboration with the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation (IRIB) of the CNR and the Neurolesi Center Bonino Pulejo IRCCS of Messina.
The BrainHeart project proposes an innovative platform to prevent the onset of cardiovascular diseases in the elderly, through a guided psychophysical wellbeing program. The system is based on wearable hardware for multi-parametric monitoring of physical and mental health and the implementation of decision support algorithms based on artificial intelligence capable of promoting regular physical activity and a healthy diet.
The second innovative aspect concerns the integration of a series of exercises, structured and organized with reference to cognitive behavioral techniques (CBT) and validated by the scientific literature. In particular, the Brainheart app proposes Mindfulness practices (MCBT) with the aim of promoting the proactive role of the elderly in health prevention by making them aware of the relationship between thoughts, emotions and symptoms of the disorder. The exercises are also used as a motivational work tool within an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) protocol, a new generation cognitive-behavioral approach, in which "commitment" components are added to mindfulness, a commitment to change the own behavior by improving lifestyle. Together with the state of health, the psychological state and the administration of personalized interactive cognitive behavioral exercises, based on clinical approaches validated by scientific literature, will also be monitored.
Care of the elderly
Improvement of the quality of life
The BrainHeart project makes it possible to move from the current intelligent mobile platform to support cardiovascular prevention of the elderly, consisting of the combination of wearable sensors and artificial intelligence and deep learning models, to the creation of a prototype in an industrial environment, which thanks to the use of key enabling technologies in the microelectronics field, will allow monitoring and decision support by stimulating the pro-active role of the elderly with a new generation cognitive-behavioral motivational approach (Mindfulness and ACT) for regular physical activity and healthy nutrition.
The support services developed thanks to the synergy between research institutions and private companies, lead to an improvement in the quality of life in the elderly. BrainHeart also lends itself to future exploitation on the territory, proposing to the current Sicilian health system a solution of convergence between technology and an informal support network, made up of the elderly themselves and / or their caregivers, who through a holistic approach technological, will be able to provide the elderly himself with the means for active and adequate support and encourage adherence to the prevention program. The elderly can be involved and motivated through psychological support on a permanent basis in the decision-making process that will concern the state of their health, in which prevention through proper nutrition and physical activity and the personalization of the program will become predominant elements.
