About Los Evangelios - AudioLibro

The culminating moment of divine Revelation to humanity has been that of the Incarnation of the Son of God. The account of that salvific work of the Lord, taught loudly by the Apostles and continually delivered in the Sacred Tradition of the Church, has been recorded in writing, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit himself, in the books of the New Testament, in those that the word of God reaches its culmination.

The New Testament opens with four books bearing the same title: "Gospel"; equally inspired as the other books of Sacred Scripture, they are the most excellent of them all, because they constitute the main testimony of life and of the doctrine of the Word made flesh, our Savior. These four books were designated with the title of "Gospel" from the beginning of the second century.

The word "gospel", of Greek origin, originally means "good news." It was also used in Greek antiquity to indicate the reward given to the bearer of that good news. When Our Lord, from the beginning of his public ministry, invites you to believe in the Gospel, he refers to the good news of the advent of the Kingdom of God that He announces, and that comes with Him. Thus the Gospel that the Apostles proclaim is the announcement of the good news, which is Jesus Christ himself.

In one of his speeches Saint Peter exposes the life of Our Lord thus: “You know what happened in Judea, beginning with Galilee, after the baptism that John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power , and how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did in the region of the Jews and in Jerusalem; who they killed by hanging him on a tree; But God raised him up on the third day and granted him the grace to appear, not to all the people, but to God's pre-established witnesses, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to bear witness that it is precisely he who has been constituted by God as judge of the living and the dead. About him all the Prophets testify that those who believe in him receive forgiveness of sins through his name.

The Gospels narrate the life of Christ, broadly following this outline of Saint Peter's discourse. Saint John begins by going back to the eternity of the Word in the bosom of the Father and exposing the Incarnation of the Son of God and his life among men. Saint Luke and Saint Matthew begin the Gospel narrative with the stories about the birth, childhood and hidden life of Jesus. Saint Mark begins his writing directly with the announcement of Saint John the Baptist about the need for penance to receive the Messiah.
