Although medieval sovereigns were entitled Imperator totius Hispaniae (in Latin: 'Emperor of all Spain'), the truth is that the lineages of the previous kingdoms were finally fused in the marriage between Isabel I of Castile and Fernando II of Aragon, better known as the Catholic Monarchs, although both kingdoms remained separate since each of the monarchs had full power in the respective domains. Between 1516 and 1518, the grandson of the Catholic Monarchs Carlos I seized power due to the incapacity of his mother Juana I of Castile, uniting the Spanish territory under a single monarch. In this way the block of the Hispanic Monarchy was being configured for the successive centuries.
