KAVALA HISTORY

The history of the creation of settlements in the area that today is identified with the boundaries of the Municipality of Kavala starts from prehistoric times and reaches the modern era. Elements of our intangible and material cultural heritage, such as myths, oral testimonies, archaeological findings, Greek and foreign language archival sources, contribute to the reconstruction of the history of the region. Historical events, such as the battle of Philippi, the arrival of the Apostle Paul, the establishment of the first Christian church in Europe and the baptism of the first European Christian woman, the first strikes in the Balkans, etc., magnificent ancient, Byzantine and newer buildings, such as the ancient theater, the Basilicas of Philippi, the Octagon, the ancient Egnatia, the Arches, the Acropolis, the Imaret, etc., and important personalities, such as Philip II (father of Alexander the Great), the Apostle Paul, Mohamed Ali et al., make the history of the Municipality of Kavala known worldwide, while challenging and inviting the citizens, as well as its visitors, to get to know it.
The triple name of Kavala (Neapolis, Christoupolis, Kavala) corresponds to different historical periods, the ancient, the Byzantine and the modern respectively.
