As far as I can tell this is a rip-off. The MTA makes it so that anyone can ride the bus free, unless of the small chance that the MTA police catch you so basically hundreds of thousands are just taking the chance. Meanwhile, now they want to force everyone into these OMNY BS cards where they take away the option to have any kind of unlimited monthly(which I rely on) and that "weekly cap" is useless because you need 12 rides and most people (myself included) work only 5 days a week. Money grab!
