With the tagline “Swachh Indhan, Behtar Jeevan", Union Government has launched a social welfare scheme "Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana" (PMUY) on 1st May 2016. The scheme was implemented with a target of providing concessional LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) connections to over 50 million below-poverty-line (BPL) families in three years, with government support of Rs 1,600 per connection. The Ujjwala scheme provided access to cooking gas cylinders without consumers having to pay a deposit to fuel retailers pmuy.
Providing LPG connections to BPL households will ensure universal coverage of cooking gas in the country. This measure will empower women and protect their health. It will reduce drudgery and the time spent on cooking indanegas. The goal for pmuy Ujjwala 1.0, which was launched in 2016, was to offer LPG connections to 5 crore women from BPL homes indanegas.
The scheme gives BPL households with a financial assistance of Rs 1600 for each LPG connection, as well as an interest-free loan to purchase a stove and refills from Oil Marketing Companies. The government would cover the administrative cost of Rs. 1600 per connection, which includes a cylinder, pressure regulator, handbook, safety hose, and other items pmuy.
PMUY Ujjwala 2.0 connection enrolment takes only a small amount of documentation. Migrants will also not be needed to submit ration cards or evidence of address in order to get the benefit indanegas. They only need a self-declaration to serve as both a "family declaration" and "proof of address."
The government also foresees this scheme to provide potential employment opportunities to at least 1,00,000 citizens and business opportunities of over Rs. 10,000 crores over a period of 3 years.
