Over many centuries took all burials in Aabenraa middle of the city on the square around St. Nicolai church. Already from the late 1700s it was clear that the space was too small, and there were many inconveniences associated with burying the dead so close to the city's housing. In 1803 took the church and city representatives therefore hold on to find a new space for the cemetery.
