Of very ancient origin, as evidenced by the discovery of archaeological remains from the Chalcolithic period, Pedrera was called BARBA in the Phoenician era and, later, under Roman rule, when it seems that it was established as a stable settlement, it was renamed ILIPULA MINOR. , dedicated to the agricultural exploitation of their lands. These urban establishments would remain active during the Visigoth period. In the times of Arab domination, the town was reduced to a village or farmhouse, joining Estepa, as an annex, after the Reconquest.
The name of Pedrera refers us to how, in medieval times, the town had become a supplier of bullets for those first artillery cannons that used stone ammunition, reaching a reputation in this matter for the excellent quality of its quarries dedicated to manufacture of these projectiles. Another known version is that for the restoration of the Estepa castle and for the construction of the road that led from Estepa to Seville, the Pedrera quarries were put into operation to extract the necessary material. This is where the current name of this municipality in the southern Sierra of Seville could have come from.
In 1557, Pedrera obtained the royal privilege to be able to establish itself as its own town hall, becoming a town. Later, in 1837, when the jurisdictional manors were abolished, it would cease to belong to the Marquesado de Estepa, becoming a Constitutional City Council.
