An app dedicated to the knowledge of plant species found inside the Experimental Nursery Center of Pistoia. Over 700 different species collected in an area of about 12 hectares at the city gates.
The significant economic and social dimension of nursery activity brought to Pistoia, at the end of the 1970s, the idea of starting a nursery structure. This is how Ce.Spe.Vi. nursery farms but above all to promote the participation in this structure of other local bodies and nursery associations.
In 2011 the Foundation of the same name took over the Cassa di Risparmio of Pistoia and Pescia.
The Experimental Center for Nursery stands on the outskirts of Pistoia in the area of the former airfield, between the Firenze-Mare motorway, the Pistoia tollbooth and the mountain link road. On the 26 hectares, purchased by the state property in 1973, structures and the first plants for plant collections were built in the 1980s. The structures are represented by a large modular building that houses warehouses, offices and a meeting room; two fixed glass and iron greenhouses and an area equipped for the cultivation of container crops.
The land is occupied for 4-5 hectares by the area of the business center and the services, where all the buildings, the greenhouses and the entrance garden are located as well as the various experimental settlements of the Universities of Florence and Pisa and of the CNR (Centro National Research Center). In addition, about 12 hectares are destined to collections of ornamental plants, while the remaining 10 hectares are destined to expand the latter.
The collections of ornamental plants housed at the Center are part of a project called "Bank of Germplasm". This has the purpose of collecting the different varieties of ornamental plants from outside, verifying their genetic and phytosanitary compliance, in order to preserve the rich genetic heritage of ornamental plants. Furthermore, it is available to operators and scholars, provides quality propagation material to nurseries and keeps the sector of plant innovations up to date.
The plants, initially created by the Institute for the propagation of wood species of the C.N.R. of Florence, were later expanded in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture and Fruit Growing of the University of Florence, and consist of conifers, flowering and hedging shrubs and trees.
Currently the Germplasm Bank already represents an important reality at the service of the nursery, as a catalog field and source of qualified multiplication material. It is also a valid educational tool to spread the knowledge of plants among students and enthusiasts of the sector. The collections now cover an area of 12 hectares with over 3,000 specimens of plants belonging to 700 different species.
With the App You will:
Navigate on the Park's high resolution image even in offline mode
Click on the surveyed plants and get all the information about the species they belong to
Have all the information on the activities of the Experimental Center
View the 3D movie of the flight over the Park
