According to the archeological discoveries, here at Ocnele Mari is the famous tribal center "Buridava".
In 1960, a local teacher accidentally discovered burnt clay pots in his garden. After the opening of an archeological site, a Dacian fortress over 2000 years old is discovered, called "Buridava fortress" (in translation the fortress of the Burians).
The exploitation of salt from Ocnele Mari is unique and the most important in southwestern Romania (hence the name Ocnele Mari), this fact being mentioned in all documents of the time since the eighteenth century.

The first systematized salt mine (St. John the Old Mine) was opened in 1836.
In 1937, the "Pavel" mine was opened (later renamed the "1 Mai" mine), where the operation. About 3.8 million tons of rock salt were extracted from this salt mine, until 1963 when it was permanently shut down.
The Ocnele Mari salt deposit has been exploited since 1959 until now by two methods of exploitation, wet by kinetic dissolution (in wells) and dry. In 1993, the works started at the new salt mine from Ocnele Mari, in Coceneşti point.
The tourist part of the salt mine includes leisure areas, playgrounds, a museum with exhibits showing the history of the area and a church.
