Asbestos is a life-threatening, carcinogenic substance. Every year, between 900 and 1,300 people die from inhaling asbestos fibres. The use of asbestos has been banned in the Netherlands for 20 years. Asbestos is still in many products and is an invisible hazard. If it is improperly removed from a home, the resident can inhale the fibers for years to come. That is why there are strict rules for the removal of asbestos.
In almost all cases, asbestos may only be removed by a certified company. Companies that are going to remove asbestos must report this in advance to the Dutch Labor Inspectorate.
The Asbestos activities app is aimed at detecting illegal asbestos remediation.
