Tokutei Ginou or Specified Skilled Workers (SSW) is a visa status / residence permit for foreign nationals in Japan which comes into effect from April 1, 2019. SSW visa holders can work in Japanese companies with the same rights and obligations as Japanese workers.
There are several reasons behind the Japanese government to finally decide on this new type of residence permit. This is the decreasing productive age of Japanese society and the imbalance between the number of productive age while the demand for workers continues to increase.
In addition, other factors such as part-time work and internships are also behind the birth of this new residence permit. For foreigners who are studying in Japan or family members in Japan can get shikakugaikatsudou, which can work 28 hours a week. The number of these shikakugaikatsudou owners continues to grow. In 2008 there were 70,833 people to 297,021 people in 2017.
