The Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery was founded and chaired in 1996 by Arthur Garrido Junior, João Batista Marchesini, Fernando Luiz Barroso and Luiz Vicente Berti. In 2006 the entity was renamed the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (SBCBM), due to the growing importance of metabolic surgery in the medical community.
