About AGLV911 DBO E DQO

1. OBJECTIVE
In this virtual lab, you will study biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) analyzes of effluents. As a key part of the analysis, you will verify all the necessary steps to obtain the results of the concentration of these parameters in effluents, from the collection of samples, passing through the verification of the need to preserve the sample, to the preparation of reagents and the analysis and interpretation of results.

At the end of this experiment, you should be able to:

recognize the importance of analyzing the BOD and COD of effluents;

check all BOD and COD analysis steps, from collection, sample preservation to reagent preparation and analysis and interpretation of results;

differentiate BOD from COD analyses;

compare the analysis results with current legislation parameters.

2. WHERE TO USE THESE CONCEPTS?
Knowledge of physical-chemical and biological analysis of effluents is very important to study water quality and verify the need to treat effluents before they are released into the environment. Parameters such as BOD and COD indicate the amount of organic matter present in the effluents. Therefore, knowing how to analyze these parameters correctly allows the precise determination of their concentration, which must be compared with current legislation, in order to avoid pollution and the reduction of dissolved oxygen in the water, which is essential for the life of aquatic beings. .

3. THE EXPERIMENT
In this experiment, you will see the step-by-step analysis of BOD and COD. You must pay attention to the several important stages of the process, so that the concentration value of these parameters in the analyzed sample is as accurate as possible. Therefore, the stages of sample collection and preservation, preparation of reagents and analysis and interpretation of results will be discussed and exemplified.

4. SECURITY
In this practice, the following personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required: latex gloves, long-sleeved lab coat, mask, goggles, cap and closed safety shoes. In addition, it is important that you attend the laboratory with your pants and hair tied.

5. SCENARIO
This practice takes place in a physical-chemical and biological analysis laboratory. The laboratory bench has all the equipment, glassware, materials and reagents needed to carry out the experiment.
