In most cases in ordinary language the word "conscience" is used as an equivalent of the word "intelligence", in the sense of activity of the mind. In reality, consciousness is a very particular kind of "realization" "In man, independent of his mental activity. First of all, "realizing" himself, realizing who he is, where he is from, and even more "realizing" what he knows, what he does not know, and so on. Only you can know if you at a given moment he is "conscious" or not.
This was proved a long time ago in a certain current of thought in European psychology, which understood that only the same man can know certain things about himself.
The presence or absence of consciousness in a man can not be proved by the observation of his external acts.
Consciousness can only be observed from within itself.
Applying it to the conscience, it means that only one man can know if his consciousness exists in a moment or not. This means that the presence or absence of consciousness in a man can not be proved by the observation of his external acts. As I said, this fact was proven a long time ago, but its importance was never fully understood, because it was always linked with the understanding of consciousness as a mental process or an activity of the mind. If a man realizes that he was not conscious until the moment he perceives it, and then he forgets this perception, or even if he remembers it, this is not consciousness. It is only the memory of a strong perception.
