About Progetto Musas

The Virtual Museum of Underwater Archeology collects 3D finds and reconstructions from the submerged sites of Baia, Egnazia and Kaulonìa, and from the collections of the Museums of Baia, Egnazia, Monasterace, Crotone and Capo Colonna: an extraordinary virtual journey in a real museum of underwater cultural heritage able to bring together material and stories from some of the most exceptional underwater archaeological sites in southern Italy.

Enter and let yourself be guided among the wonders found on the seabed of Baia, in the Gulf of Naples, where the richest and most influential men of ancient Rome had their majestic otium residences; dive into the immersive reconstruction of the sumptuous submerged Imperial Nymphaeum of Punta Epitaffio, or into the gigantic Villa dei Pisoni, with its gardens and terraces overlooking the sea, or walk through the rooms of the Virtual Museum, letting statues and artifacts reveal their secrets . Or, let yourself be amazed by the reconstruction of the port that the Romans built in Egnazia, on the Adriatic, with its mighty piers, or by the ancient beauty of the seabed of Kaulonìa, in Calabria, or by the incredible loads of the many ships that shipwrecked along the coasts of Crotone, not far from the promontory which was sacred to Hera Lacinia.

Three-dimensional models, virtual reconstructions and insights are the result of the activities of the MUSAS Underwater Archeology Museums project (www.progettomusas.eu), conceived and directed by the archaeologist of the Central Institute for Restoration Barbara Davidde, who, with a large group of technicians and specialists and with the invaluable support of all the institutions and partners involved, intended to experiment on an supraregional scale an integrated model of monitoring and enhancement of the underwater archaeological heritage, in museum collections and in situ, in order to constitute a good practice to be extended and replicate on other sites, also aiming to network submerged archaeological areas and museums through the adoption of innovative technological solutions.
