A Tax Credit for Energy efficiency is an amount of money that you subtract directly from the taxes that you owe. Unlike deductions, which reduce your taxable income, tax credits lower the amount of tax you owe or are added to your refund, should you be due one.

This tax allows the beneficiary to support energy efficient measures in different tasks. Energy-related tax incentives can make home and business energy improvements more affordable. There are credits for buying energy efficient appliances and for making energy-saving improvements.

Federal Income Tax Credits and other Incentives for Energy Efficiency were extended retroactively, through December 31, 2022. However, on August 2022, as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 signed into law on August 16, 2022, residential energy efficiency tax credits have been extended through 2032. This information applies to the existing tax credits for 2022.

Changes to residential energy efficiency tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act will become effective starting in 2023.
