The School was founded in 1950 when the wife of the first Principal of the University College of the Gold Coast (now University of Ghana, Legon) started a Nursery School in her house. As the class started to grow, the Council of the University allocated two houses at Signals Road, Achimota, to the School. The first Nursery School Supervisor, Miss Dorothy Pittam was then appointed. She was assisted by two Nursery Assistants, Miss Kofi and Miss Marbell. From the beginning, parents of the children have been contributing greatly to the development of the School.
In 1956, the School started to prepare the pupils for the Common Entrance Examination. The school became independent of the University of the Gold Coast and thus became a Private School and its name became Achimota Preparatory School. When Miss Pittman left the services of the school, Mrs. White became the first Headmistress.
At present the School is run as a voluntary body. It has a Board that carries out decisions of the Council of the School. Parents and Teachers take keen interest in the affairs of the school. Over the years, pupils of the school have performed creditably in the Basic Education Certificate Examination. The School also places premium on character development and moral uprightness.
The School now has a Staff Population of 50, comprising Teaching and non-teaching staff. The Student population is as follows:
Nursery: - 105
Primary: - 417
J.H.S.: - 368
