Reog is one of the cultural arts originating from the northwestern part of East Java and Ponorogo is considered the true hometown of Reog. The Ponorogo city gate is decorated with figures of warok and gemblak, two figures who also appear when reog is performed. Reog is one of the regional cultures in Indonesia which is still very thick with mystical things and strong mysticism. The history of Reog Ponorogo began in the 1920s.
Actually there are five versions of the well-known story of the origins of reog and warok. The most famous story is about the rebellion of Ki Ageng Kutu who was a royal servant during the Bhre Kertabhumi era, who was the last king of the Majapahit kingdom, who came to power in the 15th century. Ki Ageng Kutu was furious because of the strong influence from the wife of the king of the Majapahit kingdom who originally from China. In addition to that, he was also angry with his own king, who was running his government there was a lot of corruption. He can ensure that the reign of the Majapahit royal power will end soon.

In the Reog performance, a mask with the shape of a lion's head is also shown, commonly known as "lion barong", the king of the forest, which makes it the symbol of Kertabhumi. Several years ago the Reog Ponorogo Foundation initiated the establishment of the Reog Nusantara Association whose members consisted of reog groups from various regions in Indonesia who had taken part in the National Reog Festival.
