Don Alonso, a noble knight of Olmedo, goes to the fair in Medina with his servant, Tello. There, he sees a beautiful lady, Doña Inés, from whom he falls in love. He hires a procuress, named Fabia, to whom he gives a loving letter that he, in turn, will deliver to Dona Inés in exchange for a chain.
Fabia goes to the house of Ines with the excuse of selling cosmetics, and prompts her to read some papers among which is the letter. Once she has read it, Fabia convinces her to answer it, but at that moment her fiancé Don Rodrigo enters, along with her friend Don Fernando. When they meet Fabia they get upset, but Ines and her sister, Dona Leonor, deceive them by saying that it is the old woman who cleans the clothes.
