The plot of this work is borrowed from the ancient Celtic sagas. Tristan and Isolde repeatedly became heroes of medieval knightly novels of the XII-XIII centuries. Joseph Bedier was a famous French philologist, who devoted his life to studying medieval texts. He translated several legendary legends into modern French, including this book.
The Russian translation was made by A.A. Veselovsky in 1903.
