Clean Games is an environmental educational project in the form of team competitions in cleaning up natural areas from garbage and its further separation. A sort of a modern alternative to community clean-ups.
During the game:
- participants gather the waste separately, with about half of it going to recycling after the game has come to an end;
- participants search for artifacts - i.e. unusual finds - to later share stories of their discoveries;
- solve environmental quizzes;
- compete in Green Workout and much much more.
For each activity during the game points are awarded.
The team with the biggest number of points receives prizes.
Game statistics are kept in real time on the website and in the mobile application.
During one game, an average of 1-3 tons of waste is collected.
The mobile application is to be used directly while the game is in progress and allows one to:
- find locations where garbage is accumulated, as well as to see the nearest centres to hand it over to;
- make check-ins, that is place geotags of cleared spaces attaching photos thereto, thus creating an interactive map of all the places successfully cleaned up;
- monitor your team’s rating online.
For game organizers, the application also allows to:
- devise the map of the game;
- send notifications to participants;
-count results online.
The project began with a simple volunteer initiative in St. Petersburg in the year 2014. The mission now is to use the game to draw people’s attention to major environmental problems, such as pollution, spreading of landfills and wasteful use of resources, thereby raising public awareness to these issues and teaching people how to gather the waste separately and setting an example of reverence towards the nature.
