WeatherCitizen enables the collection, sharing, and analysis of crowd sourced weather observations from mobile devices. Observations can be collected directly from the phone’s existing environmental sensors, manual entry of current weather conditions, or the phone’s camera and microphone. Data can also be collected using Bluetooth-enabled sensors. These observations are uploaded to a cloud database, where they are
accessible by the National Weather Service and NOAA to improve forecasts and
determine whether to issue alerts or warnings. Observations can also be
uploaded to social media platforms such as Twitter, where they can be seen
and utilized by a wide audience, including boaters and weather forecasters.
