Beautiful, but the game plays you
Penguin Isle is visually beautiful and calming. The graphics, aesthetic, and sound design are excellent: from the penguin noises to the mellow music and splashing. The variety of penguins and Arctic animals adds charm and makes the island feel alive. Unfortunately, progression is overwhelmingly ad-driven. After a short time, it stops feeling like you’re playing a game and starts feeling like the game is playing you. Advancement depends on watching way too many ads, many of which are incredibly unpleasant and strange, completely breaking the relaxing atmosphere. Once the novelty wears off, you’re stuck in the same loop: watch ads, unlock a small upgrade, repeat. What should be relaxing turns into a rat race and a waste of time. Great presentation, but the aggressive ad model and the games many redundancies ruins the experience of “playing” a game
