About Stud Finder: AI Metal Detector
Find hidden metal objects behind walls using your phone’s magnetic sensor.
This app detects ferrous metal (iron, steel) by measuring magnetic field variations in microteslas (µT). It's ideal for locating metal studs, nails, screws, pipes, or other magnetic materials.
How It Works:
Your phone has a built-in magnetometer that measures the surrounding magnetic field. The app calibrates automatically at startup, setting a baseline for your environment. Readings are displayed in real-time, and deviations from the baseline indicate the presence of magnetic objects.
Examples of detection (relative to baseline):
- Empty air: ~baseline (10–60 µT)
- Nail or screw: +5 to +20 µT
- Coin or small metal piece: +20 to +50 µT
- Pipe or screwdriver: +50 to +100 µT
- Metal stud (in wall): +80 to +150 µT
- Strong magnetic source: +150 to 300+ µT
Features:
- Real-time µT reading
- Adjustable sensitivity slider
- "Hold" button to freeze the current value
- Automatic and manual calibration
- Simple and intuitive interface
Works without internet
Tips for better accuracy:
- Remove any phone case or metallic accessories
- Stay away from electronic devices while calibrating
- Use the back of your phone (near the top) for best results — that’s where the sensor is usually located
Calibration saves the current µT value as the baseline
If you get high readings even with nothing nearby, the sensor may need time to stabilize (especially after exposure to strong magnets)
Use it to:
- Locate metal studs behind drywall
- Detect hidden screws or nails
- Scan for magnetic fields around electronic devices
Explore your surroundings with a scientific curiosity!
