Vessel Familiarisation and Competency Testing
Fathom increases familiarisation and safety through bespoke questions based on existing safety and technical manuals. This is not a generic app with general seafarer information, but specific to each vessel.
Main features:
Questions are created using the vessel’s safety and technical manuals, fire plan and vessel layouts (including rank and role-specific information) to test, gauge and improve familiarisation.
Near-Field Communication tags are used to: pinpoint safety equipment, link to specific machinery information, or use as part of a physical familiarisation test.
Through competency testing, the senior crew will know how acquainted the crew are with safety and technical information and be able to target training accordingly.
Down-time, breakdowns and accidents are reduced through increased vessel knowledge.
FATHOM has three main sections, Revise, Test, and Results.
Revision Modules:
These include sections from your ISM and SOLAS manuals, location tests and vessel familiarisation. The question banks can be attempted as often as needed, with answers given immediately to aid learning. No results are sent to the Senior Crew Dashboard, this section is just to revise and build familiarisation of the vessel.
Test:
There are two types of questions; a physical location question (which requires the crew to scan an NFC tag with their phone), or a multiple-choice question. The multiple-choice questions have four bespoke, viable answers, all based on vessel documentation. Hyperlinks or section references for the manuals can be added to encourage crew members to go to the manuals and find the answers themselves.
Results:
Crew dashboard: All results are shown immediately to aid learning, and a percentage score is shown for each module to highlight areas where improvement is needed.
Senior Crew Dashboard: Trends can be seen in the test results showing improved performance over time and gaps in knowledge, pinpointing where additional drills or training is required.
