About BirdNET

How can computers learn to recognize birds from sounds? The BirdNET research project uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to train computers to identify nearly 3,000 of the most common species of North America and Europe. You can record a file using the internal microphone of your iOS device and see if BirdNET correctly identifies the probable bird species present in your recording. Get to know the birds around you and help us to collect observations by submitting your recordings.

BirdNET is a joint project of the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Chemnitz University of Technology.

Great little app

It’s pretty spot on. Just wish that I could tell them that it’s a painted bunting I’m looking at in the Observation for it somehow. But still, really super app, especially since they were kind to make it free. Thanks.

Ok

The app is remarkably accurate for common N American and European birds. Other contingents may be more sketchy, it was incapable of identifying Eudyptula novaehollandiae (Aus Little Penguin), and some Hawaiian, Asian species. Also, for some reason the app is duplifying the ‘species with valid detection’ in its list, smth that can be quickly corrected if there was someone still in charge of the app. Apart from this, it brought me a lot of joy.
