About Landesmuseum Halle

The official audio guide to the State Museum of Prehistory
(Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte) in Halle (Saale).

The State Museum of Prehistory (Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte) in Halle (Saale) is one of Central Europe’s leading archaeological museums. The extensive collection has numerous pieces of European importance as well as some of world renown, including the truly exceptional find of the Nebra Sky Disc, now inscribed as UNESCO Memory of the World.
In this historic museum building’s welcoming and bright rooms, archaeologists have created scenes of the everyday life of Central Germany’s first inhabitants, enabling visitors to take a fascinating journey through time to explore the roots of human history in Europe. Fascinating staged scenes offer a realistic impression of prehistoric life, with wild cave lions and impressive mammoths, Neanderthals deep in thought, Ice Age hunting grounds, shamans, burial chambers, princely graves with golden grave goods and, of course, the Nebra Sky Disc (1600 B.C.), the world’s oldest known concrete depiction of the heavens.

Apart from showing its permanent collection, the State Museum of Prehistory regularly presents special temporary exhibitions.
